PAF in MO

I am one of the newest residents of Missouri. I have a new driver's license, Missouri licenses plates, registered to vote and even got a bank account. Looks like my post PC lazyness-fest is complete.

I found an apartment, which was extremely stressful. It has two bedrooms and a subtle odor, but I am quickly replacing it with my stench. Right now my apt is rather pathetic because the movers wont arrive until Fri. I have all of the modern conveniences including internet and cable with HBO, but I still find myself watching PBS.

I start my new job tomorrow. I don't know what I will be doing. I probably wont know for about 6 months. The only thing that I do know is that I won't get paid until the end of june. Money is tight. I had to pay sales tax on my car before i could register it. I will refrain from my sales tax rant.

We have had a few impressive rainstorms and it has been hot. Am I in Karonga?

Maine is Greening and the Rains Are Abating

Congratulations, Stephanie!
And Scott, sorry about the rabbinical school bummer, but congrats (maybe?) on being jobbed.
Sounds like you guys are doing well. Keep up the good work.

Funny, but last night Tommy and Dakotah were in my dream. (All right people, don't get cheeky.) I haven't had a dream about any of you in a long time. I guess I've been missing you.

Not much else has changed for me. I am working on getting my mother's mobile home sold and have a tentative offer that will ease some of the debt I've incurred, but I don't think we're going to finish free and clear. Bit of a bummer. I keep seeing these job announcements that look pretty cool, but some are overseas and although I am still packed and could go, I am tied down here until my mother's estate is closed. That's a bit frustrating. Still, it may be for the best, forcing me to stay put and luring me with stability. (Yikes.) I am leaning towards buying a house, and in order to do that it looks like I will return to my teaching job for at least another year. I think this is one of those times when I have to make the less desirable choice now in order to make something better happen later. That hasn't always been my strong suit. Still, one of my decision making criteria is whether I will regret it down the road, and I don't see the potential for regret on this one, even though I see the potential for impatience, frustration and misery on the job. I am hoping that I will indeed find a house and that that will be where my fun challenges and fulfillment will manifest themselves. Maybe this is my mother's way of finally getting me to "settle down." Hmph.

That's more or less where my head is. I can't say that any of this is really difficult, but nor can I say that it has been easy. I'd say that it's like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, but it's not like that. It's more like trudging on through mud up to your ankles, on the beach, so all around you it's scenic and beautiful, and people are strolling by, bright and colorful, tossing frisbees, dipping their feet in the ocean, lying out under their umbrellas, reading a good book with their cold drink melting on the cooler at their elbows, and you, you are just trying to make your way to the end of the beach one, two, three heavy, dragging steps at a time. Yeah. It's a little bit like that. Masiku amathera ku chitseko. Days come and go through the door.

In any case, there are some nice beaches up here should anyone feel like venturing to Maine to see what all the fuss is about. As you know, you all have open invitations for life. You are most welcome. Bug spray is optional, as our mosquitoes, though big, can't kill you.

P.S. Ryan - I have stooped to borrowing Rachel's set of Buffy DVDs. Missing you, bud.

See ya!
Martha

sigh

I'm so disappointed in X-men 3 that it's ridiculous. I'm crushed and dismayed, almost as if I just marked my student's exams, yep, that's the feeling. -Tommy

better website

Hi all,

If you really care about reading about The Hunger Project, a better website is www.thp.org. Either is fine, but the main page for thp.org is nicer.

Also Jobbed in New York!

Hi all,

Yeah, what's up with the quiet board? I miss you guys and want to hear everything!

I got offered a job yesterday at The Hunger Project (www.thehungerproject.com). THP actually operates in Malawi (and many other countries world-wide) and surprisingly at our "boma," so Joaquin and I thought it sounded familiar when I applied. I interviewed on Monday, got called on Tuesday to come in for a second interview, and got offered the job yesterday evening. I also join the workforce on Tuesday. I am so excited for this job, it really feels like it was made for me. I am the Office Manager/Receptionist, and I'm getting paid a bit more than when I left Oregon to join PC. I'm pretty happy to have been offered enough money to survive by a non-profit company. I don't know if I'll return to school. Honestly, I like doing administrative work and I need to realize there is no shame in doing what I like and what I'm good at. So I'm proud to be the office manager for The Hunger Project. My co-workers are great, 18 women, 2 men, and all motivated by the desire to end hunger. One of the ladies interviewing me even got teary-eyed as she told me about their work with African Women Farmers. I knew I wanted to work there when I saw that someone who had been there a while could still get touched by the work.

Miss you all! Tonight Kelly and Tom are coming over for pizza (they're bringing the pizza) and then off to Brooklyn for some movie about Cameroon or something. Anyone else care to join us? :)

I've been jobbed!

Well, things are looking up for me. Two of my previous jobs both were unhappy to hear I didn't make rabbi school, but were eager to fill my free time with employment. I had one offer very quickly, and it pays pretty nicely, but wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Then, one of the people I used to program with in NASA decided they had a job that was perfect for me, if I wanted it. I said sure, and she then proceeded to create the job for me! The job description was based on my resume. (When it posted, and I applied online, I couldn't resist putting in the cover letter "This job and I are such a perfect match, it's as if it was made for me!") I went through the interview Monday, and got a call giving me the job on Tuesday. So, as of next Tuesday, I'm officially back among the employed masses! This job doesn't pay as well as the first one I was offered, but gives me the warm fuzzies of saying, "Well, at least I work for NASA." And it pays better than the job I left to join Peace Corps, so all-in-all, I'm in a good software engineer's life.

Not really sure that this is what I want to be when I grow up, but it's definitely a good way to pass the time...

Speaking of passing the time, I'm going on a four day camping deal, to the Kerrville Folk Festival. It's one of the biggest folk music festivals in the U.S., and basically, it's where all the modern hippies hang out. Maybe my guitar skills will improve while there. Last time I went, I didn't know enough guitar, and I was clean shaven and with a crew cut. Now, between the beard, some knowledge of guitar, and the possibility of amazing them with my Peace Corps adventures, I think I'll fit in better.

Life's good!

Hope everything is good with y'all. The postings have gotten kind of quiet lately!

Stay well,

-- Scott

XBOX-less in Asheville

Hey y'all, Greetings from Asheville, hope all are well. I just wanted to let everyone know what is shakin' down here.

I am working at a family support office as a case worker for "at risk" youths. So far the job is great, I played on a playground, caught tad poles, played baseball, and found a big snake skin. The kids have some tough things to overcome but so far so good. I do not have a desk or a xbox(though that job sounds pretty awesome.)

I also have settled in at the church here and have started accepting clients as a Christian Science Practitioner(someone who helps another find healing through prayer). I am doing this part time until I can build up a client base and then will proceed full time.

In my free time I bike alot and am taking Mandarin classes, which are just a bit harder than tumbuka. Tons of music fest and art exhibits so if your in the neighborhood stop in.

i'm addicted to lost

i haven't posted on here in a really long time. sadly, it's because there is really not a whole lot to talk about. i'm still teaching, but that will be ending in just a couple weeks. then i need to find a job for the 2 months before school starts. i was thinking of working at a book store, if one will hire me. no matter how much more money i would make, i just can't go into food service again. i wish that school would just start now. i'm tired of waiting.
in the week or so in between jobs, i am trying to plan a trip out to new york to visit all you kids who are living out there. i'm just waiting for my fare tracker to find a ticket for super cheap.
i really have nothing else to talk about. sad. umm...as of this weekend, i am now the proud owner of a lawnmower and trimmer. exciting, i know.
anyway, i will stop boring you with useless information about me. basically i'm just doing nothing. waiting for august so i can start down an actual career path. i hope all of you are doing well. i miss you and think of you often.

love - jess

I bought a Malawi flag here in Albuquerque from some flag sellers. They also have a website, if any of you wish to buy a Malawian flag.

no more unemployment

Well I finally decided to become a contributing member of society. I accepted an engineering position with 3M. Soon I will be moving to Columbia, Missouri. It is about halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City. I am hoping to be out there within a few weeks.

Help with Cape Town

Hi Everyone-

Well I have some family friends who are moving to Cape Town with a new job they accepted. The husband will be working with BP (British Petroleum) while the wife who has a degree in both law and engineering will be looking for job there in Cape Town.

So I was wondering if any of y'all no any one in cape town who might be able to help out with any contacts that the wife might me able to use her degree. Currently she is working with prison people and helping them with any question they have about Law. But she is open to anything. Does anyone know Mary Kinney's email? She might now some NGO's that she could look into.

Anyways, aside from trying to help my friends out things are going well here in Seattle. I am just going to my biology and chemistry classes and going through the motions. Today I made a fool of myself -- I over heard my professor say ".....what is the answer?" and I for once new the answer and blurted it out. Unfortunately I didn't hear him ask a SPECIFIC student to answer that question. And upon me blurting out the question, the professor "shushed" me because he wants to hear the answer from another student. At that point I realized that I become the student that I most hate: the student who sits in front and thinks they know the answer to everything. Man, I am such an IDIOT!

Anyways that is my latest drama in school and I thought y'all are appriciate that story. Especially since you are all teachers and have that one annoying student who you know that you can always call on to answer a question and now I am that student:)

So I have had a cell phone for some time but haven't really annouced to everyone my number. So if y'all feel like calling me you can reach me at 360-927-6263. In addition if any of you feel like coming to Seattle any of you can crash at my place. i have a couple of nice couches that any of you can sleep on.

Well I hope everyone is healthy and well and if any of you all know any one in Cape Town or other NGO who is looking for some one witha Law degree then please let me know.

Thanks
dakotah
