Update on Jess

Hello Friends -

I hope everyone is doing well. Congratulations to Steph on the return to school and to Martha on the new house. I am happy for you both. My life is much less interesting, but I thought I would give you all an update anyway.

The school year finished up really well for me. I worked my butt off for the last few months of the semester and managed to do well in my classes, despite spending so much of my study time doing wedding planning at the beginning of the semester. I also managed to get a spot as an editor of the law review. Its a journal that the law school puts out, and is a really big deal to future employers, for some reason.

It was nice to get a break from school for the summer, but I'm glad that the summer is winding up. I'm tired of working two jobs. I'm clerking for a judge at the city courthouse and I am also working at a small law firm. Both jobs are fun, but difficult. Although I guess I should get used to working all the time, because I think that is what attorneys do. Next month I start interviewing for my job for next summer, which will likely be my job when I graduate. So I'm looking at firms, and Paul and I are trying to decide where we want to live when all this school is done. If anyone has recommendations for cities, let me know. At the moment, we are leaning toward Chicago.

Speaking of school being done, Paul just got a job working as an EMT and is putting in his two weeks at his old job. So soon he will be riding around the city in an ambulance, saving lives and whatnot. He's excited but nervous. He is high on the waiting list for a job with the fire department, which is what he really wants to do, so this job is a temporary hold over until he gets a position there.

Besides that, there isn't really much else to talk about. I almost ran over a tiny little kitten in the Del Taco drive through and took it home, so now I have a kitten named Taco. Having a kitten running around the house again makes me miss my perpetually pregnant cat, Masula. The volunteer who took my place assures me that she is happy and healthy, but I wish she was here. The two dogs really want to play with Taco, but he will have nothing to do with them. It makes for alot of hissing and running. I'm hoping they'll all start to get along soon.

That's all for now. But, to close, my favorite disposable-camera picture from the wedding, of the reunion of the Mtelera Bitches. I love you, ladies...

update from Stephanie

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update on my end. I decided to go back to school! I've been accepted to the Columbia Teachers College Cognitive Studies in Education program. I'll be starting in September. I hadn't expected to do this, but it is working out nicely. I didn't realize when we first moved here that all the applied psychology programs for Columbia are housed in the Teachers College, everything from Developmental Psych to Counseling, to even Cognitive Studies. My program will be all about using what we know about cognitive psych and how to use that in the classroom. So this won't lead me to being a teacher at all (I leave that to those with more fortitude than I), but rather it will lead me to doing research in and for the classroom. I've been offered the job of graduate assistant in a lab that is doing research on reading and comprehension and catching kids before they are labeled learning disabled. I am so very excited. Please, though, if you happen to meet me for lunch or visit me at work, don't say anything just yet :-) We'll get to that a little later.

I hope you are all doing great.

Love,

Stephanie
