Facebook?

Hi all,

I'm not sure how much we're keeping up with each other on the blog. What if we started a group on Facebook? Almost everyone is on facebook. Then we could post our links, or have discussions, and make announcements. Just like we do on this blog, except almost no one checks it. What do you all think?

Good news!

Well, it looks like my turn to have a momentous life changing event has rolled around, and it's about time I announce it.

Come August 7th of this year, I'll be getting married. The wonderful woman is named Tammy, and some of you have actually met her. We've been dating for three years, which means we're long past due to tie the knot. Let's see, a brief summary of the relationship...

We met using an online dating service. She was living in Atlanta at the time, and I was living in Houston, but we got over that. (It helps that much of her family is 1-4 hours away from Houston.) She's a great person - has both a JD and MSW, but gave up on law so she could go out and Do Good, first in child advocacy, and now in teaching financial literacy. All around, she's pretty darn cool, which would be why I proposed to her.

So, like I said, we're planning to get married on August 7th. You're all welcome, if you want to make the trip to Houston. (Just send me a mail with your address and I'll send you an invite once we get them made up.) I can't make guarantees on this yet, but I expect we can find a few friends who will let you sleep on their couch, if you need.

That's my news announcement. Hope everyone else is doing well!

edit: Let's go with August 8, instead of August 7th. 8/8 is a much easier anniversary date, and even looks kind of like an emoticon. That, and we decided to have mercy on some of our guests - if the wedding was on August 7th, the ceremony wouldn't even begin until 21:00, and the reception wouldn't start until 22:00. (Jews aren't allowed to get married until the Sabbath is over, and in August, it's not over till really late). Instead, we'll simply do the evening of August 8th. I promise, we won't change the date any more after this.

Malawi in the New York Times - Money to families who support orphans

Malawi's in the New York Times again. Here's the article. It's rambling and not the best writing I've seen (and I'm pretty sure it's an American, not Malawian writer), but it does talk about an interesting new policy and compares it to the orphanage concept.

Hope everyone's doing well!

21 December: Sorry folks, I had the wrong link. The old one apparently tried going to my inbox. The one in the article now will take you to the NYT article. You have to login to NYTimes.com, but the login is free...

Thanks, Patrick, for catching that!

Hey, Everyone!

Hope you all are doing well. I am also fine, and how are you?

If you didn't see it, the Malawian kid who hand-built a windmill was on The Daily Show recently. Check it out here: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-october-7-2009/william-kamkwamba

The National Peace Corps Association is trying to survey everyone in any way affiliated with Peace Corps. I got this email on the malawi volunteer yahoo list, and am forwarding it for anyone who hasn't seen it there.
